Job Description:
DEFINITION  
The Graduate School of International Policy & Management (GSIPM) at The Monterey Institute of International Studies invites applications for a full-time faculty position in International Negotiations and Conflict Resolution. The position is available at Assistant Professor level and applicants should demonstrate excellent teaching ability and a record of scholarship.  
 
Under general supervision of the GSIPM Dean, the person selected for this position will teach core classes in international negotiation, conflict resolution and mediation. Additionally he/she will lead advanced training seminars and simulations geared toward an internationally diverse graduate student population. The Professor should be proficient and have experience in the cross-cultural, international, and language dynamics as variants impacting negotiation, conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Applicants must have a PhD. Salary is commensurate with academic qualifications and experience.  
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  
- Teach classes in the areas listed above  
- Assist and advise colleagues and Dean in curriculum development  
- Serve as an academic advisor to students  
- Engage in normal academic research activities in area of expertise  
- Participate in regular faculty functions, meetings and activities as required  
- Maintain a professional profile through research and/or professional service

Requirements:
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS  
 
In evaluating the record and potential of candidates for appointment, primary consideration is given to the following:  
 
- Teaching ability, as evidenced by appropriate references, student evaluations and recommendations of peers.  
- Professional competence, as evidenced by the candidate's educational record; scholarly activities such as publications, research and papers presented at professional meetings; and reputation among peers in the field of specialization.  
- Personal attributes, such as integrity, initiative, breadth and focus of intellectual interest, and willingness to advise and assist students and participate in Institute activities.  
 
Quality in teaching is the first and most important responsibility of all Monterey Institute faculty.  
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  
 
Prior teaching experience is essential including the design, introduction, and management of relevant bilateral and multilateral negotiation and mediation simulations. International experience working in the policy arena is highly desirable. Knowledge of various conflict resolution mechanisms, international law, and practical experience relevant to these various subject areas is important.  
 
Assistant Professor: Normally, the possession of the doctorate, the equivalent professional experience, or the highest degree available in the candidate's field of specialization; demonstrated competence in teaching; high standards of scholarship; and promise of growth and development in the professional field.  
OR  
Associate Professor: The possession of the doctorate, the equivalent professional experience, or the highest degree available in the candidate's field of specialization; at least five (5) years' experience in significant teaching at the college level, in research in an equivalent professional organization, or experience in academic administration; and a superior record of scholarship and professional accomplishment.


Additional Information:

The Monterey Institute operates on a contract system for faculty appointments. This position is for three years, renewable for another three years, after an institutional review at the end of the second year.  
 
Applicants fluent in a language other than English will have the opportunity to teach courses and workshops in that language. International experience working in the policy arena is highly desirable.  
 
Physical Effort and Work Environment  
 
The Monterey Institute maintains a smoke-free and drug-free workplace. Position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
