Job Description:
Under the supervision of the CNS NTI Project Manager and Director of either the Newly Independent States Nonproliferation Program (NISNP) or the East Asia Nonproliferation Program (EANP) at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), the Research Associate will assist in the operations and implementation of activities tasked to and performed at CNS, as described in the duties below. This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), non-exempt staff position.  
 
Essential Duties  
 
- Write reports and supervise student contributions to various NTI databases and other deliverable to NTI (Nuclear Threat Initiative), including on regional nonproliferation topics. Regions of interest: former Soviet Union, China, East and South East Asia, Middle East.  
- Conduct original research and write reports and scholarly articles on the proliferation of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons to state and non-state actors, their means of delivery and strategies for control.  
- Present research results at professional conferences and workshops.  
- Assist in completing and developing new proposals and reports about existing CNS research projects for funders, as needed.  
- Participate in other CNS events and activities, including presentations to the CNS Visiting Fellows Program, as well as other outreach and educational projects.  
- Assist in the organization of seminars, meetings, outreach activities, as requested by CNS senior staff and management.

Requirements:
Skills/Abilities  
 
- Excellent analytical, research, and report writing skills.  
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.  
- Facility with Internet/WWW.  
- Fluency in Russian, Chinese, Korean, or Arabic is desirable.  
- Capable of multi-tasking and working in challenging, intense, and dynamic environment.  
- Willingness and ability to adapt to changing technologies and systems.  
- Willingness and ability to comply with Institute policies, procedures, and mandates.  
 
Education/Experience  
 
M.A. degree in political science, international relations, or equivalent experience in the field. Previous research experience and publications on WMD nonproliferation topics are desirable.

Physical Effort/Environment  
The Monterey Institute maintains a smoke-free and drug-free workplace. Position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.  
 
 
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and previous experience in conducting research in the area of WMD nonproliferation.
